Crib Recall Injury Lawyers

Parents invest significant time and energy in researching the safest products for their baby, and trust that the cribs they purchase are free of defects that would cause injury or death to their children. Considering that 9 million drop-side cribs have been recalled within the last five years, it is more important than ever for parents to check the cribs that their infants use for proper functionality and to see if the crib has been included in a recall.

Drop-Side Crib Recall Announcements

On June 24, 2010, over 2 million cribs from seven different companies were recalled due to the potential risk of suffocation, entrapment and fall injury for infants. While no infant deaths have been linked to this most recent crib recall, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of at least 16 infant entrapments and one report of a child losing consciousness and needing to be hospitalized. This recall includes:

  • 750,000 Jenny Lind drop-side cribs distributed by Evenflo Inc.
  • 747,000 Delta drop-side cribs.
  • 306,000 Bonavita, Babi Italia and ISSI drop-side cribs manufactured by LaJobi Inc.
  • 130,000 Jardine drop-side cribs imported by Toys R Us.
  • 156,000 Million Dollar Baby drop-side cribs.
  • 50,000 Simmons drop-side cribs.
  • 40,000 to 50,000 Child Craft brand stationary-side cribs and an unknown number of Child Craft brand drop-sides. (Child Craft is no longer in operation and sold its name to Foundations Worldwide Inc.)

Graco Cribs recalled 200,000 baby cribs in April of 2010, initiating discussion among Government officials regarding a wholesale ban on all drop-side cribs. In May 2010, C&T International/Sorelle recalled 170,000 drop-side baby cribs due to the risk that one of the sides of the cribs could come out of its tracking and easily detach itself from the crib. The CPSC received reports that 6 infants endured bruising and abrasions to the head, face, torso, or leg after becoming entrapped or falling after the drop-side fell down.

Dangerous Crib Design and Infant Injury

The potential dangers of suffocation, strangulation, falls, and entrapment posed by the design and functionality of drop-side cribs have been a major concern over the last decade. Although the side rail of drop-side cribs move up and down in a gate-like mechanism to allow parents ease in lifting a child from the crib, this style of crib has been associated with at least 32 infant and toddler deaths since 2000. Moreover, in most of the recalled cribs, the hardware that allows the side of the crib to slide can occasionally break or detach. This causes the drop side to separate completely from the rest of the crib, creating a dangerous gap between the crib mattress and the drop side. The gap presents the risk of infants becoming wedged and enduring suffocation, injury, or strangulation.
